What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is a practice that is over 5000 years old. Its literal meaning is "of wind and water."  It's a traditional Chinese concept connecting the destiny of man to his environment.  Its goal is to ensure people live in harmony with their surroundings.  The Chinese deep belief in Ch'i (pronounced Chee) is the vital life force that is everywhere. It permeates your home, physical surroundings, and all elements of Mother Earth- the mountains, trees, and all bodies of water and people.  Feng Shui is a life force that encapsulates all living things of the Earth. It can also include elements of astronomy and astrology and the way planets, the moon, the sun, and even the stars receive their energy here on Earth.  Feng Shui is the art of placement, which enables one to tap into the beneficial Ch'i energy, dissipate, and remove unfavorable energy to us (such as illness, fighting, loss etc.) and also to the earth (geopathic stress, human injury to the land etc.).  Not only does it harmonize the home, but also the land (geomancy) and physical formations of the earth.

Balance

Feng Shui is a practice based on the idea that our homes are a mirror of whats happening inside of us (jobs, relationships, wealth, family etc.).  The purpose of Feng Shui is to get your environment in alignment with  who you are and where you want to go-to harmonize your energy with your homes energy. Overall, its main purpose is to create balance; a term referred to as "Yin and Yang" that reminds us there is a balance to all life: masculine and feminine, light and dark, movement and stillness.

Bagua

This is an essential tool in the majority of Feng Shui practices.  Bagua translates as "eight" (ba) "areas" or "symbols" (gua) and it originated as a Tao symbol in ancient China as a means of incorporating the principles of Yin and Yang (feminine and masculine). It is a map used to divide the home and land into 8 different guas.  Each section has its own meaning, symbols, gender, and corresponds with the different areas of one's life (health, prosperity, career, family, love, etc.). Using this map helps to "boost" areas that one is looking to change or enhance.
